Modern Farmhouse Laundry Room Reno for Small Spaces

Modern Farmhouse Laundry Room Renovation | Before and After

Last year we set out to renovate our laundry room. We barely acknowledged this space even existed during the build process. Let’s face it, our funds were being chewed up by our kitchen, naturally, so we told ourselves the laundry room would be a project a year or two down the road!

It’s a smaller space measuring 6.5’ x 7.75’ with no natural light. It’s on our second floor, just outside our master bedroom. We love having it close to our rooms, but it was far from functional. No place to toss clean clothes, except on top of the dryer in piles so large they would always topple. The cleaners & rags on the open shelving were an eye sore and let’s face it, there was nothing visually enticing in our laundry room to help lure me in. Chores aren’t fun, especially in a dull space. The obnoxious wire shelving unit came included in our build, so did the “boob” light, not pictured. That was it…one open wire shelf, a light, and hook-ups for our washer and dryer. Yaaaaaay (I say very sarcastically). But hey…I love our kitchen! ;)

Modern Farmhouse Laundry Room Renovation

After the funds had been saved (a budget of around $2500), I started drafting out ideas on paper.

WISH LIST
-Folding table
-Space to hang garments
-Cabinets for storage
-Fun tile/lighting

With a top loading washer, we only had one wall suitable for a folding table; the one across from entry. We had our carpenter install a butcher block countertop with shiplap to the ceiling for a farmhouse feel. He also added a few cubbies underneath, off to the right. I use one for “missing socks” and the other is for clean rags.

We custom ordered our cabinetry from Menards, opting for a soft gray shaker style with black bar pulls. I wanted the cabinets to fit perfectly over the width of our washer & dryer for smoother aesthetics, and to hit the ceiling to make the room appear larger, so I made sure to measure accordingly. We found our schoolhouse styled light fixture from Wayfair, our glass canisters for detergent pods and clothespins are from Target, and our faux plant is Magnolia’s Hearth & Hand brand from Target.

Because our cabinetry stops short of the wall, it ended up being a perfect space for a garment rod. My husband custom ordered one to fit our space. But my favorite part of the room, you ask? Our ceramic hexagon tile from Wayfair. It’s different, it’s fun, and it makes me enjoy laundry just a smidgen more. :)

What do you think of our final design? What is your favorite part of your current laundry room and what is on your wish list? Let me know!
